What it's all about:

Curious to discover some of our city’s up-and-coming top chefs and bartenders? Then where better to sample some of their culinary flair than at the Scholars’ Restaurant – City of Glasgow College’s training restaurant for cookery and hospitality students. Under the supervision of their lecturers, students are timetabled to serve meals in a working environment, gaining invaluable industry experience from awarding winning chef lecturers.

Currently serving a small plates menu, this is the perfect opportunity to sample lots of different flavours, ingredients – and talent.

Surplus ingredients surprise...

What makes it a ‘Food Hero’ dish?

The dishes served in Scholars’ Restaurant will include an element which is made using surplus ingredients that have been left over from class exercises, or from excess food that has been donated. There will also be a dish of the day, specifically created with the Plate up for Glasgow ethos in mind to support the campaign.  With no two days the same, these chefs-in-training will be tasked with the ultimate challenge of coming up with something delicious from “leftovers”. This ensures that little to no food is wasted throughout the college, which is great for the environment in the short term, as well as reinforcing strong sustainable practices in our chefs of the future.

Testimonial:

Our current food systems are evolving frequently, and it is important that we incorporate knowledge in our learner's journey allowing them to explore food waste strategies and more efficient menu planning . Educating our students to understand the environmental impact for the time when they are responsible for purchasing, preparing, and disposing of food will prepare them to put into practice what they have learned while at college. Plate up for Glasgow is an innovative campaign which really helps to reinforce the importance of these teachings.

Please bear in mind...

*Dining options showcased on the Plate up for Glasgow site are examples only, and are subject to change.

Please bear in mind that as a food waste campaign that focuses on using surplus ingredients, dining options may change regularly. We think this is something that should be celebrated – although it does make it difficult to know in advance which options you’ll be able to choose  from, or their availability. So when it’s gone, it’s gone. And when it’s gone, there’s no waste!

Participating venues are responsible for showcasing their own daily dining offers throughout the campaign period. We would strongly recommend contacting them directly to confirm details and availability before your visit to avoid disappointment.

Due to the nature of this campaign, catering for all dietary requirements may be limited. However, we have done our best to cater for as many needs as we can.

And of course, dining options are never created with ingredients that are past their sell-by date. “Leftover” food is just food that is surplus or unsold, which unfortunately happens all too often along food supply chains.
